Hey Reader, Winter is the season of the root- a slow, pulsing in the deep rich earth, a space where we can lay still, breathe, and gather ourselves and our overstimulated minds back into the heartbeat of Mother Earth. Where we can throw off our fancy jackets and stories and bury our weary bodies in the life-sustaining soil and return renewed when the time is right. Root season invites us to turn inward. Just as the plants and trees focus their energy below the soil, we too are called to go deeper into ourselves. Root season is a time of strength, stability, and connection to the earth, I encourage you, when it’s appropriate- maybe best to avoid this exercise when you are driving - to close your eyes and imagine you are a root, Perhaps the strong taproot of dandelion, reaching down, deep down into the nourishing, mineral-rich soil, Or you may be the roots of the mighty oak, reaching far and wide- reaching out, decompressing- stretching those magnificent roots. Or, you may be a completely different root. The choice is yours. Take a few moments to breathe gently in the rich and welcoming darkness—there is nothing scary here, only nourishment that can make you weep with its holding and gentleness. When you open your eyes again, your body feels a little different, perhaps lighter and less constricted than before. Part of the beauty of working with plant spirit herbalism is that we can access a particular plant's medicine —whether for our soul or our body—whenever we need it. When our bodies and souls are tired, we can reach out across space and time and connect with the nourishing root. We can fold ourselves into the intoxicating blooms of the summer season when we need joy, light, and inspiration—regardless of the actual season outside. This week, dandelion roots have once again been part of my life. The dear folks I volunteer with at my local community garden saved more of the dandelion roots for me when they weeded the garden beds. So, here is a dandelion root recipe that is the perfect antidote to outside craziness or just a little touch of grounding and sweetness in your day. You can download it here and save it for when you need it. I love hearing your responses! So hit 'reply' and let me know if the season of the root resonates with you. Warmest, Wendy |
